Rest In Cubes
It’s a sad day. This is the day the GameCube died. Nintendo has just sent word over the wire that they will no longer be making them.
You could say it was the GameCube that got me back into gaming. I was no stranger to the consoles, oh no. I had an Intellivision, a Nintendo, a Super Nintendo and a PS1… looking at it that way I didn’t actually miss a generation of consoles. But the PS1 didn't get used that often, plus I was in high school, and I got distracted, pulled away from games. I felt like I skipped that generation though (especially since my friends now all had N64’s and I have never played it).
I picked up a GameCube after I somehow found out there was a new Zelda title. I knew nothing about it. But anything with the Zelda brand always had my attention. Toys R Us was running a special where you got Wind Waker free with the Cube. I couldn’t say no. This was 2002(?) maybe 2003. Either way, picking up a controller again felt so good.
Zelda had me for several months. It was everything I remember a video game could be. It was nothing like the PlayStation previously in my possession. The GameCube really showed me how much fun video games could be. Like a junky clean for a few years that little Cube was just a gateway for harder stuff... I soon owned an Xbox and felt good. They complimented each other so well.
I now consider myself a gamer, and I would not have if it weren’t for the GameCube. Thank you GameCube. You changed my life.
